eSIM

What is an eSIM?

eSIM is an embedded SIM card and the successor of SIM cards. eSIM is integrated SIM chip that cannot be and does not need to be removed from the device. Information on eSIM is rewritable, which means that you can change operators using a normal telephone connection. They can be easily added to the subscription - connecting devices with eSIM to a mobile account can be done in a few minutes.
eSIM is supported by GSMA, an association of mobile networks, and this organization has defined the standard for eSIM around the world.

How does this work?

The eSIM module, which is an abbreviation for the built-in universal circuit board, is equipped with a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) system and remote control functions. Put simply, the manufacturer of smartphones or smart devices solders it directly to the motherboard of this device. Thanks to remote management capabilities, the activation and management of eSIM compatible devices become convenient. You don't even have to visit the mobile operator's store. When another mobile operator activates eSIM, you can directly switch between phone number profiles and other data services in the phone settings.

Advantages and disadvantages of eSIM

Advantages:

  • There is no possibility to lose a card because it is attached to the device itself.
  • Provides the same level of security as a removable SIM card. It also supports the integrity of the billing process during roaming scenarios.
  • It stores many cellular profiles, thanks to which it works without problems around the world.

Disadvantages:

  • It is possible to hack eSIM card data from cloud hosting.
  • This is a challenge that must be implemented worldwide by network operators to ensure smooth operations.
  • Users who like to use different mobile phones can do so using SIM cards. This is not possible with the eSIM card because it is built into the motherboard of the mobile phone.
