How can you pay with your phone?

Ways to pay by your smartphone

Invalid IMEI.

You’ve been able to pay for things with your mobile phone for a long time, but most people still prefer to pay by card. Apple and Google more focus on mobile payment. Here we show you some ways how you can pay by your smartphone.

Paying with phone

Security of paying your mobile

Is shopping by using a mobile phone safe? It's just as secure as using a credit card and in some ways safer. To protect yourself, keep the following in mind:
Broken devices carry an additional risk - if your device is infected by malware, your payment information may be affected. Also, you need to remember about a strong password, PIN number or biometric characteristic.

NFC device

To make payments, you need a telephone with Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC chips stocked inside credit cards for contactless payments are nothing new. But a slightly more recent - and admittedly more enticing - use case for NFC is with your smartphone, or even your smartwatch, as a way to digitize your entire wallet. NFC allows the phone to communicate with the merchant's payment terminal via radio waves. Devices with NFC are all phones made in recent years both Android and iPhone. If you are not sure if your phone works with NFC, check the manual or search in the phone's settings.

Mobile wallet

If you want to spend with your phone, you need to store payment information in the mobile wallet. This means loading credit or debit card information into the wallet (usually by entering it or taking a photo of the card) or linking the wallet to another payment account.

Here are some popular Mobile Wallets:

  • Apple Pay,
  • Google Wallet,
  • Wallet for Windows Phone,
  • Wallet.

How to pay with your phone?

In most cases, you'll go to checkout as usual. When the time comes for payment, gently touch the payment terminal with your phone. Depending on your device and mobile wallet, you may need to "wake up" the phone or unlock the wallet before doing so - you'll understand this after a few attempts. At some point in the transaction, you need to verify your identity (using a PIN, fingerprint or other methods), and then payment will take place.

All this works only if the seller can accept payments from a mobile phone. In some places, there are no proper cashier terminals installed (or at least not yet) and they may not know how to accept mobile payments, even if they have the right equipment.
